ALGOMA NEW HORIZONS BAND
We are here to enjoy ourselves, keeping our minds active and engaged, learning music, making music, and helping and caring for each other.
Algoma New Horizons Band gives adults the opportunity to learn a concert band instrument, return to an instrument they once played, or continue developing their skills in a welcoming community setting.
Whether you have never played an instrument before or have years of experience, there is a place for you.
Please note: Algoma New Horizons Band is an independent community music program hosted at Case’s Music. The program is organized and facilitated by Algoma New Horizons Band and operates independently of Case’s Music.
What We Do
As adults, we come to New Horizons to enjoy learning and making music in a safe, fun, and caring environment.
Algoma New Horizons specializes in teaching adult beginners who have never played an instrument before, while also providing opportunities for returning and experienced musicians to continue growing their skills.
Our bands offer an encouraging place to learn, play together, meet new people, and experience the enjoyment of making music as part of an ensemble.

Algoma New Horizons Band provides entry points for musicians at a range of experience levels.
Beginner Band
Mondays | 6:00–7:00 PM
Level 0.5–1
Never played an instrument before? This is where to start.
Beginner Band is designed for those learning their first instrument, as well as musicians beginning a second instrument.
You’ll learn the fundamentals, including:

Caring for and maintaining your instrument
-
Producing a good sound
-
Reading music notation
-
Basic rhythm and note reading
-
Playing simple concert band music
No previous musical experience is required.
Intermediate Band
Tuesdays | 6:00–7:30 PM
Level 1–2
Intermediate Band is a great entry point for musicians who already know their instrument but want to refresh or rebuild their skills. It is also the natural next step for musicians graduating from Beginner Band.
At this level, members begin developing musicianship beyond basic rhythm and note reading, including:

Effective practice routines

Scales

Musical techniques and expression

Playing easy concert band repertoire
Advanced Band
Mondays | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
Mainly Level 2–3
Coffee break included.
Advanced Band offers some extra challenge—and some extra playing time—for musicians with greater experience on their instrument.
This group is suited to players who are comfortable with sight reading and would enjoy developing their technical and ensemble skills further.

More challenging concert band repertoire
Cost
The fee is $220 per term, which includes 14 classes.
There are two terms each year:
Fall Term
September through December
Spring Term
January through May

Members are responsible for obtaining their own instrument, study book, and required accessories.

Youth Mentorship
Algoma New Horizons Band also introduces young people to music and concert band as an opportunity to become involved in a rewarding, real-world community activity.
The group includes many retired teachers and experienced community members who bring patience, encouragement, and kindness to creating a safe and nurturing environment for young musicians.
It is also an opportunity for young people to interact with and build connections with adults in their community through a shared love of music.
Parents and grandparents are welcome to get involved too. Adults can become members and learn an instrument alongside their child or grandchild.
Young musicians are generally welcomed from age 10, once they are physically able to comfortably handle an appropriate instrument.
Learning an instrument can become much more than an activity for a season—it can create a lifelong connection to music, creativity, community, and performance.
